As you may be
aware, traditionally, this tournament has taken place throughout the
summer months, running concurrently with, and on a similar format
to, the Pope and Smith Postal Tournament. As both tournaments have
struggled for entries in the past few years, the Romford and
District League Committee agreed that we should try switching our
tournament to a winter postal tournament to provide a postal-format
competition throughout the year. The tournament organisers also
successfully applied for LTA accreditation and for the first time
the tournament became a Grade 5 competition allowing ratings and
ranking points to be won. Unfortunately this did not seem to
attract many new competitors and therefore it is not considered
viable to go ahead with the tournament at this time.
This postal
tournament has a very long history and it would be a shame if it was
lost from the ‘tournament calendar’ altogether. It is likely,
therefore, that the tournament will revert to being a summer postal
tournament beginning in spring 2009 with finals day next September. |
